Why are longitude lines ellipses and latitude lines circular?

The answer to both questions is that the Earth is rotating about an axis through the poles. The shape of the circles or ellipses depends upon the shape of the Earth's surface. I am not going to go into a detailed discussion here. The details are easy enough to find if you are really interested.
